Childhood Immunisations – What Can You Do To Prepare?

Childhood immunisations can be tough – and we’re not just talking about for the kids! We spend every minute thinking of ways we can protect our kids from any pain or discomfort, so it’s completely normal to feel concerned before their vaccination appointment. We understand that it’s not the most enjoyable thing to do, and want to give you a few tips to bring some ease on the day.

Immunising your child is one of the most important ways you can protect them against preventable diseases. All vaccinations recommended through the National Immunisation Program have been through extensive testing before administration and are safe for your child. Your GP will discuss with you some of the common side effects that your child may experience after their vaccinations.

You know your child best, so how you talk to them about their vaccination appointment is entirely your choice. Creating a calm environment and using positive language around the vaccination can provide reassurance for your child. Our nurses and GP’s will also do what we can to make it an enjoyable experience- think bubbles and stickers, or a lollipop if allowed for the older kids!

Some other resources and tips that may be helpful prior to your child’s appointment may be;

Books

  • Peppa Pig – Peppa gets a vaccination
  • Bing Book – Doctor Bing

Shows

  • Daniel Tiger – Daniel Gets a Shot

Role Play

  • You and your child can dress up as doctor’s and give a pretend needle
  • Teddy bear can also get a vaccine!

As children grow and begin to understand more, open and honest conversations about immunisations can help build trust and reassure them that not every visit to the doctor involves a surprise needle! Where possible, try to reinforce with positive language such as ‘We’re going to the doctor today for a vaccination, they will give you the medicine in your arm to make you get big and strong!’

What To Do On The Day

Dress for comfort

Choose comfortable clothing for your child, preferably loose-fitting so arms and legs can be easily accessed. This can make the vaccination process easier and help your child feel more relaxed. The doctor and nurse will also assist with how best to hold your child during the administration of vaccinations.

Consider pain relief

Some vaccinations may increase the chance of your child developing a temperature. If your child is getting the Meningococcal B vaccination (given at 6 weeks, 4 months and 12 months), please give paracetamol 30 mins prior to their appointment. A subsequent 2 doses of paracetamol after their vaccinations is also recommended.

Although we don’t routinely recommend paracetamol for other vaccinations, if your child appears to be in discomfort afterwards then it is ok to do so.

Keep the day flexible

Avoid making too many plans- Every child is different, some may not notice they’ve even had their vaccinations! Others may require some extra sleep and cuddles, so it is a good idea to take the pressure off strict deadlines for the day.

Bring your child health record (… or don’t!)

Your child’s health record book (the Blue Book in South Australia) is where vaccinations can be recorded. If you remember, please bring it along to the appointment. If you forget, don’t worry—we know parents already have plenty to remember! All vaccinations are also recorded on the Australian Immunisation Register and can be accessed at any time.

Your GP may discuss additional vaccinations that are optional for your child. Although these are not in the National Immunisation Program, they may still be available (with an additional cost) at the clinic. Please feel free to ask about any other vaccines available if you would like to consider them.
