Education Classes & Support Groups

We love providing education to families who are expecting a baby, as well as supporting them in the postnatal space. We also want to bring like-minded parents together to create new villages. At Adelaide Mums and Babies Clinic we are currently providing 3 services, with more to be added.

Bookings can be made by calling the clinic (8166 4381) or emailing reception at hello@mumsandbabies.com.au or online bookings via website or hotdocs. All our classes are run on-site at Rose Park.

Antenatal Breastfeeding Education Class

These private group classes are run as small group, by one of our GP Lactation Consultants. 8 women (and their partners if they would also like to attend) are brought together for a 2.5 hour session to get breastfeeding off to the best start possible. Currently, these are run once a month, on a Thursday night from 5.30pm – 8pm. The best time to attend this session is between 32-37 weeks gestation; however, attending at any time is better than not attending at all! So many women we see with breastfeeding issues wish they had known all this before they had a baby. Although breastfeeding is natural, it can be one of the most difficult things you will ever do.

Topics include:

  • Antenatal colostrum expression and storage
  • Anatomy and physiology of breastmilk production
  • Extraction of breast milk
  • The first few days (the hospital stay)
  • After your milk “comes in”
  • Engorgement and low milk supply
  • Being separated from your baby
  • Paced bottle feeding
  • Gestalt Breastfeeding – fit and hold (an evidence-based approach to significantly reducing nipple pain, improve milk transfer and decrease fussing at the breast).
  • Q&A session that answers individual questions and concerns

Inclusions:

  • Antenatal colostrum expression syringes and caps (and a wet-bag!)
  • Refreshments (tea, coffee, water, snacks)
  • Handouts: not just of the slides, but so much more information to help with breastfeeding and managing a new born.

Price: The total cost of $100 is payable beforehand at the time of booking and do not attract a Medicare rebate. Partners can attend for free.

Cancellation Policy: Cancellations over 48 hours will receive a full refund. Cancellations under 48 hours will receive a 50% refund.

How to book: Bookings can be made online or by calling the clinic

Bringing Baby Home Class

These private group classes are run as small group. Jayne (our NDC Parent Support Worker) presents the information with one of our NDC Accredited GPs. These are run as 2x 2 hour sessions on consecutive Saturday mornings. Currently, we are running these once a month. These are best done anytime during your pregnancy (although we also accept families with newborns). We have a maximum of 12 people in a class and these sessions are very worthwhile for ALL parents, not just first-time parents.

All of the education is framed in the evidence-based Neuroprotective Developmental Care approach to infant care. This was developed by Dr Pamela Douglas (GP, IBCLC and researcher). All of our medical staff are accredited in this training.

Parents often receive conflicting advice when bringing their newborn home. This class will empower you to raise your baby in a cued-care approach and have confidence in your parenting skills.

Topics include:

  • Parenting values clarification
  • Infant sleep
  • Infant settling – ” The Two Tools”
  • Feeding (both breast and bottle feeding)
  • Parental mental health and wellbeing (managing difficult thoughts and feelings in the perinatal space)

Inclusions:

  • Refreshments (tea, coffee, water and morning tea).
  • Handouts: not just of the slides, but so much more information to help with managing a new born.

Pricing: The total cost of $100 per person is payable beforehand at the time of booking and do not attract a Medicare rebate.

Cancellation Policy: Cancellations over 48 hours will receive a full refund. Cancellations under 48 hours will receive a 50% refund.

How to book: Bookings can be made online or by calling the clinic.

Parents Groups (with NDC Framing)

These are run by our NDC Parent Support Worker, Jayne. We aim to bring 6 parents and their babies together weekly, for 6 weeks. Initially, we are running these on either a Wednesday morning &/or Thursday morning (10-11:30am). Our focus is on parents with babies 5 months and under. We welcome not only first time parents, but parents who have other children that are unfamiliar with the NDC approach and keen to try something different. It is also an excellent way to meet other like-minded parents with similar aged babies (great for families that have moved to Adelaide and keen to find a new village).

These are perfect if your feel traditional “Mothers Group” may not be right for you, or have not sat well with you for your previous babies. We are keen to add to your village with like-minded parents. Our classes are:

  • Inclusive
  • Non-judgemental
  • Evidence based
  • Safe & supportive

Within the framing of Neuroprotective Developmental Care parents will learn evidence based approaches to feeding, sleep, settling, development and emotional wellbeing. Conflicting advice can be overwhelming in the early months of parenting, and our Parents Group aims to support you to feel confident and well-informed. Over a duration of 6 weeks, Jayne will answer any questions you may have about infant care, bringing 6 parent & baby pairs together for a 90-minute session per week.

The topics discussed in these parents groups will be flexible, according to group needs, but will often cover: adjusting to motherhood; managing extended family dynamics; feeding (bottle and breast); sleep; settling options; parenting values and self-care; starting solids; and anything else you want advice on!

Inclusions: refreshments and morning tea

Pricing: These groups do not attract a Medicare rebate. Payment for the full 6 sessions is required up front ($240). Gift cards are available. These groups would make a fabulous baby shower present for a parent-to-be.

Cancellation Policy: (Cancellations for the entire 6 week block): Cancellations over 24 hours will receive a full refund. Cancellations under 24 hours have an $80 fee.

Circle of Security Parenting (Class)

These are run by our Circle of Security Facilitator, Jayne.

At times all parents feel lost or without a clue about what our child might need from us. Imagine what it might feel like if you were able to make sense of what your child was really asking from you. The Circle of Security Parenting program is based on decades of research about how secure parent-child relationships can be supported and strenthened. The program supports parents to develop the skills they need to see beyond their child’s behaviour, to the need that lies beneath. Focusing on the unique relationship you have with your child. CoSP leaves you with a deeper understanding of both your child and yourself.

Across the classes you will learn to:

  • Understand your child’s emotional world by learning to read their emotional needs
  • Deepen your connection with your child
  • Support your child’s ability to manage emotions
  • Enhance the development of self-esteem and wellbeing
  • Honour your innate wisdom and desire for your child to be secure
  • Examine the way you were parented and how it impacts your parenting
