Perinatal Psychology
Danielle Heavyside
Registered Psychologist
A bit about Danielle…
Here is a little about my approach and why I do what I do, to help you get to know me, before I get to know you.
Holding a Master of Psychology, I have been a registered Psychologist since 2011. I have a diverse background working across a variety of industries, and with people predominantly working in professional organisations.
I have a passion for working with women across all stages of the motherhood journey as I believe that motherhood, and the associated matrescence, have multiple transition points where a women can either struggle, or grow and evolve with the correct support.
I work holistically with my clients understanding that the female body works differently to that of the male body. Mental health can’t be explored independently and is impacted by many factors including the physical, social, emotional, cultural and spiritual.
I work with women to find their purpose, and to understand who, what, why and where they are currently. In session I often support women to change patterns that no longer serve them and provide strategies for them to live optimally. To do this I employ a range of therapeutic, evidence-based, psychological approaches tailored to individual needs. I am trained in modalities such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Acceptance Commitment Therapy (ACT) Mindfulness-based Cognitive Therapy, Compassion-focused therapy, Motivational Interviewing, and Attachment Theory. I believe strongly in weaving these modalities with practical, problem solving, solutions-focussed approaches and providing a therapeutic space that allows individuals to learn about themselves in a relaxed, accepting environment. Therapy doesn’t need to be draining – I work from a growth mindset – you set the goals for your therapy and I assist you to find the best way forward, be that a need for behavioural change, improved habits, replacing unhelpful thoughts or tapping into your core values to find solutions to problems faced.
I assist women to find themselves again, regain confidence, and help them negotiate the significant changes that come with parenthood. I also support women through issues with anger, anxiety, depression, grief and loss, birth trauma, with issues that may arise from their own experience of being parented and absolutely love working with women navigating return to work or career redirection.
I like to think that I bring a warmth, reality and genuineness to my work, creating a supportive environment to enable women to navigate the topics that have prompted them to seek support.
Perinatal Therapy
Gemma Sandeman
Perinatal Therapist and Accredited Social Worker
A bit about Gemma…
I am an Accredited Social Worker, holding a Master of Social Work. I have spent my career supporting infants, children and parents in the NGO sector and am highly experienced in supporting mothers experiencing a complex mental health diagnosis during the perinatal period with a focus on promoting secure attachment. I have a passion for supporting women in motherhood as they navigate the significant changes that can come with parenthood and find their identity and confidence as a mum.
My approach to therapy is warm, genuine and down-to-earth. I work to create a relaxed and non-judgemental atmosphere where clients can explore and understand emotional difficulties, interpersonal experiences (including parenting) and unhelpful patterns in the context of their own attachment history and life experiences. I am experienced in providing evidenced based, developmentally responsive parenting guidance that prioritises connection between parent and child, as well as considering the overall functioning of the family. I enjoy helping parents move from overwhelm to confidence in navigating the whirlwind that can be raising tiny humans.
As a social work trained therapist, I have a strong focus on supporting clients to understand themselves within the context of the world they live in – when supporting mothers this often looks like challenging the “perfect mother myth” and unpacking the expectations placed on mothers and their children. Social work practice is person-centred and strengths based, and as such, my aim is always to ensure the experience of therapy is tailored to meet the specific needs of individuals and draws upon their strengths in order to find sustainable and achievable change.
I believe that families come in all different shapes, sizes and orientations. I strive to provide support that is welcoming and inclusive to all families.
