Dr Briony Andrew

MBBS FRACGP DRANZCOG Adv IBCLC

Briony has lived in South Australia for most of her life, although she was born in Darwin. She graduated from Medicine at the University of Adelaide in 2006 and then worked at the Lyell McEwin Hospital for 3 years. During this time she undertook training in Emergency Medicine and Obstetrics and completed her DRANZCOG (Diploma in Obstetrics). She commenced her specialist GP training in 2010 at Murray Bridge and by mid 2011 she had achieved both her Fellowship in General Practice (FRACGP) and her Advanced Diploma in Obstetrics (DRANZCOG Adv).

Since 2011 she has been working at Mt Barker Hospital as a GP Obstetrician and delivering babies. It has been, and continues to be, a wonderful experience! She loves the continuity of care that GP Obstetrics allows – not just for pregnancy and postnatal care, but also for the whole family.

In 2018 she became an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant(IBCLC). Her interest in lactation began during her obstetric training; however, struggling to feed her own two children made her realise how hard it is to find good, evidence-based advice and support when things are not going well. She has experienced most of the complications of breastfeeding!!

Her current professional passions are obstetrics and mother-baby care during the first year of life. She has completed training in Neuroprotective Developmental Care with the Possums Clinic, giving her expertise in the areas of breastfeeding medicine, infant sleep, unsettled infant behaviour and maternal anxiety and depression. She also enjoys women’s health more broadly. She loves to see mother-baby teams thrive and feels she is expertly placed to give the help that is needed.

Becoming a co-founder of Adelaide Mums and Babies Clinic at Rose Park has fulfilled a career dream of hers. Developing new initiatives to provide support to women and their children, and bringing together a like-minded team of health care professionals, is something she has aspired to for many years.
